Some people argue that Google has taken action against black hat SEO. Well, this might be true, but it’s not always the case. I held an interview on my blog a couple of days back. One guy who runs an ecommerce store wrote this:

We actually got an outbound links penalty notification in webmaster tools a couple weeks ago, right when the MyBlogGuest penalty happened.

It’s hard to find time to write fresh articles when we’re constantly adding new product to the site and so many other things, so I posted on MyBlogGuest in 2013 that we would accept a very limited amount of guest posts.

In that whole time, we actually only published seven of the several hundred propels we received. Yeah. Seven posts! These were only good and relevant content, and any outbound links were manually vetted so as not to link to any spammy, irrelevant, or penalized site.

The message from Google, though, is clear: guest posting at any kind of scale is going to be treated as harshly as other kinds of link networks. For personal projects, I will continue to use my own careful judgment about guest posting on a case by case basis, but for any kind of client work or for in-house SEO people, guest posting is probably best regarded as a ticking time bomb for your site now.
