Before I write my book description I want to say that I’m in remission now. Cancer hasn’t killed me yet, which surprises me because once upon a time my oncologist said to me, “You have two months to live, at most.” He also said, “And you’re too sick to start chemo. It would kill you. You have to wait at least a month.” None of this was really news to me because every time I closed my eyes to sleep, I thought I might not wake up. Yet, oddly, in some ways, I was happier than I’d ever been before.

As for my book description, I’m supposed to make liberal use of keyword tails. You probably don’t know what a keyword tail is. So, even if you didn’t have a problem before reading this, you have one now. You don’t know what a keyword tail is. But don’t worry; I’ll explain it to you. After I explain it, you’ll be able to share your knowledge at work, at home, and at parties of all sorts. “By the way,” you’ll say, “have you heard about keyword tails. They’re quite astounding. By genetic engineering, keywords now have tails, flat ones like a beaver. They eat turnips and rutabagas, and are therefore not a threat to humanity, except in areas that grow turnips and rutabagas.”

Before I tell you what keyword tails are, I should probably tell what my book is about. But, before I do that, I need to make a list of these words. Cancer. Cancer Memoirs. Cancer books. Cancer memoirs and biographies. Cancer cures. Death and grief. Cancer awareness.

Cancer, My Journey back to Life, Book One is the first of what I hope will be a series of four or more books about how I dealt with cancer spiritually, emotionally, physically, and mentally. My book is not so much a book of answers as it is a book of explorations. Over the course of many years, I wrote these essays with the idea of sharing them with my children. Eventually, I shared them with friends, some of whom, of course, encouraged me to write a book.

I write about how I practiced different forms of meditation to focus my mind on things other than pain. I write about fear and how it can grab you and leave you feeling utterly and totally helpless. It can leave you, literally, shaking and gasping for breath. This kind of fear is beyond thought, beyond reason. But you can prepare for it. And if you do, even as you’re shaking and even as your mind is shutting down, a small voice of hope will still get through to you.

I write about the pain and fear that my family lived with year after year. In a way, the emotional and physical changes I saw in my family were cancer as debilitating as mine. They fluctuated between numbness and anger. Some ran away and hid. Some were so devoted that they didn’t take care of themselves.

But more than anything I write about being happy. Cancer forced me to live in the moment. It forced me to greet each new sunrise as a gift. It turned me from a man that felt uncomfortable with affection into a man who would hug strangers and say “I love you,” and mean it.

Cancer taught me that as weak and helpless as I often felt, that I was always strong enough to look for love and joy. Cancer taught me that how you live is how you die. And cancer taught me that you can be happy even when you feel terrible. I wish that I’d had a more-gentle teacher, but such was not my fate.

Now back to keyword tails. Keyword tails are words that you might type into the Amazon search box when looking for my book. I’m supposed to sprinkle keywords into my book description so that you will find my book and buy it. I think the idea of sprinkling keywords in my book description is silly and probably useless too. Therefore, I will not engage in sprinkling. Nor will I engage in other forms of subliminal (read my) tactics (book). Goodbye, and thank you.

One final thing, if you’re still not sure you want to buy my book, go to the “Look Inside” link on the upper left of this page, or the “Send a Free Sample” link near the upper right. Better yet, be brave, buy my book.
