Alus on ainoa tähän mennessä nimeä kantanut. HMS Shropshire tilattiin 17. maaliskuuta 1926 William Beardmore and Companyltä Dalmuirista Glasgowista osana vuoden 1926 laivasto-ohjelmaa. Sen köli laskettiin 24. helmikuuta 1927 ja alus laskettiin vesille 5. heinäkuuta 1927. Alus oli ensimmäinen täten nimetty ja nimen oli valinnut Amiraliteetin ensimmäinen lordi Mr Bridgeman, joka oli myös parlamentin jäsen.
