The ISM Code's origins go back to the late 1980s, when there was mounting concern about poor management standards in shipping. The ISM Code evolved through the development of the Guidelines on management for the safe operation of ships and for pollution prevention (resolution A.647(16)). The Code, in its current form, was adopted by the Organization in 1993 and amended in 2000, 2004, 2005, 2008 and 2013.
