Not illustrated. 1877 Excerpt: ... re-potting cyclamens may be avoided and the health and the strength of the plants at the same time improved by the simple expedient of planting out pot cyclamens from June to the end of September. Beds composed of equal parts peat, leaf mould, loam or garden earth, spent manure, and sand, about a foot or 1 Sin. deep and of any handy size, are prepared in a sheltered partially shaded part of the garden, and the cyclamens planted ont thereon at distances varying from 6in. to 24in. apart, according to their sizes. Keep clear of weeds, and water the bulbs a few times should the weather or site prove too dry. The plants will make great progress, and in the autumn will be found to have grown into matchless tufts of beauty, with fine clean foliage, and the crowns of the corms bristling with embryo flower buds and stems. They should be whipped up with a handy trowel with roots and soil almost entire, and placed in pots according to their sizes, filling up the interstices left around the sides of the pots with the soil already recommended. Water the plants home into their new quarters, shade for a few days till the roots have struck into the new soil, and then place the cyclamens in their flowering quarters. Plants treated thus have mostly a robustness of character and a dwarf compactness of habit that is seldom found among those grown altogether in pots. Insects and diseases may be said to be nil among cyclamens, as, under fairly good treatment, no insects attack, no disease affects them. True, some of the older and mostly the larger bulbs go blind--that is, they produce few leaves and no flowers, and while the corm Btill continues to exhibit signs of life the bulbs are altogether useless for decorative purposes.
