This book is a five phase examination of Wallace Stevens' poetry and poetic works: poetic self-discovery; concern for the role of the poet in the collectivistic and de-humanized society of the 1930's; focus of the centrality of poetry in the individual's struggle to retain self-identity in a sterile mass society; the intellectual period of the 1940's; and the meditative poetry of Stevens' last years.
