Description

In this collection of essays, 12 international economists analyze every government since Peron's first presidency, including the latest military administrations. The appraisal of the first Peronist period (1946-55) is originally revisionist, while the ambitious aims of the "Revolucion Libertadora", which overthrew Peron, are shown as neither liberal nor liberating. The years 1958-74 are examined, revealing that Argentina at that time went through a remarkable period of growth not usually appreciated by commentators. The shortcomings of the military government's economic policies are seen as a consequence of their weak and belated response to the world oil crisis and the book ends with a postscript on President Alfonsin's changing economic strategy in his first years of government.
