In 1808, the family removed to Mich igan, and settled in the vicinity of Detroit. The disturbed state of the country immedi ately preceding the breaking out of the war, added to the difficulties and privations incident to a residence in a new country, sparsely settled; especially, as they were located upon the frontier, and were thus exposed to many perils. Following the example of his father, who had entered the army, John enlisted at Detroit, in May, 1812, in the Ri e Company of Captain A. De Quendra, for twelve months. This com pany went immediately into active service.
