Ready to Teach Fiction for 3rd-5th Grade: Lessons Created for Common Core State Standards

Our vision with Ready to Teach Fiction for 3rd-5th Grade is to provide a framework that embeds the English Language Arts Common Core Standard in Reading Literature. Lessons are presented in an easy to follow format. The ultimate goal is that students become independent readers and thinkers. In the 21st Century, students have become accustom to interactive stimulation. With this in mind, we have formatted the lessons to be interactive without losing sight of fundamental reading strategies and skills. The lessons begin with a brief explanation of the standard and the lesson objective. We give a "Teacher Tip" which includes any materials needed and any advice that may be helpful in preparing for and presenting the lesson. In the connect segment of the lesson, there is an explanation of how the reading strategy pertains to the students' real world. The communicate segment gives the explicit lesson taught by the teacher, followed by a collaborate segment where teachers are guided toward how to best check for understanding through student practice. Next, in the create segment, students practice in independent reading material to provide teacher with an avenue for observation and assessment. Each lesson incorporates a "Tech Tip" which consists of suggestions for how to integrate graphic organizers, charts, etc. through technology (document camera, Flip video camera, Interactive whiteboards, computers, etc.)
