In 1865, at the close of the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln was assassinated; few Americans don't know about that horrible day. The first plot to kill Lincoln, however, happened before the Civil War began, even before Lincoln assumed the office for which he was sorely needed. The leaders of secession, already well into their plan to revolt against their government, hatched a plot to kill Lincoln while he passed through Baltimore on his way to take the oath of office in Washington. Allen Pinkerton, founder of the already-famous Pinkerton Detective Agency, learned of those plans, and with the help of his undercover agents, found out the true nature of what would have been the first battle of the Civil War.
