Description

The collection represents papers given at two annual academic conferences held at Trinity College Dublin in 2008 and 2009. Collectively they represent a variety of approaches and topics which, each in their own way, deal with the creation and reception of biblical traditions. Each paper individually is a contribution to scholarship in its own right.

The book consists of nine essays on the understanding and reception of biblical traditions in Judaism and Christianity. The collection begins with a discussion of one of the ways one can understand the formation of traditions by communities and ends with a surprising discussion of translations of the New Testament into Hebrew. Along the way, a variety of biblical texts are discussed both in the ways they have been interpreted and can be seen to interpret previous traditions themselves. Together the collection raises provoking questions on the ways in which the Bible has played and continues to play a role in the construction of communities' beliefs.
