Wind River recounts the murder of a mysterious and seductive young woman that entangles an isolated western town’s most notable citizens in tentacles of deceit and deception in 1965.
East coast transplant Rufus Dandee, a brilliant and charming achondroplasian dwarf, is editor of Wind River’s newspaper. Rufus provides the first-person narrative nexus of two loving but gnarled families, both treasure troves of dark secrets that bubble to the surface with the murder of Rachel Wall.
The heavily shrouded secrets of the families and the town of Wind River are exposed as Rufus tries to absolve his best friend Wallace Kilcannon of the murder. Wallace, blessed and cursed with an uncanny prescience of pending death, does nothing to prove his innocence, becoming the scapegoat for the evil and dishonesty that bleeds the soul of Wind River.
Through archived newspaper articles and his interpretation of short silent movie reels, Rufus weaves the history of Wind River and his personal story into the events of that summer of murder. Characters from within and without the community assume disguises to maintain their lifestyle or achieve a nefarious purpose while others hide behind the falsehoods of their comfortable, everyday lives.
