Every one who lives in Scotland, and every visitor, notices the names of places. This little booklet does not explain the meaning of all of them. What it does is show how the places names of Scotland derive from many different languages, and how they help us know about the people who settled the country from the Dark Ages to the Eighteenth Century.
Here is the concluding paragraph:
"I am not suggesting that place names in Scotland are more interesting than those of any other country. All place names everywhere are full of history. Many street names in Continental Europe seem to be dates, which can leave the visitor bemused unless there is a smart-phone handy. However, this lecture has been about Scotland and I hope that you will, after reading it, find more interest in the road atlas as you drive around and more interest in the street names as you stroll through the streets."
