"Harvest" is a portrait of a European peasant whose ambition is to make a vineyard and to produce fine wine. In the 1870s, a prisoner of his language, a young man escapes from German-occupied Alsace. With his precious vine cuttings he emigrates to Australia.
Claude de Courcy is the force and central character of the story. Building life, loves and family he faces many obstacles and moral dilemmas. In his community on the Hunter he is both a valley man and a stranger. Old hatreds and new ones tear at his heart when he opposes the common cause, the Great War.
