Description

Eggs Bacon and Medication is a controversial novel where staff and clients break shared bread over the breakfast table. The plot evolves on a small busy Psychiatric Intensive Care Ward. The staff are somewhat laid back at times. They’re under constant stress, from rigours, demands of clients and constant manipulation and deceitfulness of lies and abuse.
The qualified nursing staff and care assistants see the ward as an explosive dumping ground for the odds and sods of the old Psychiatric system. Long term inpatients, such as Katie King, Mark Cope, Rachael Smith and the likes of Samuel Dennison, they’re part of that revolving door syndrome, like many others no one wants.
Their hopeless institutionalized lives revolve round living in the system of the hospital. They’re well known for pushing boundaries, and press the right buttons for a staff reaction. Ward managers, from acute wards, are unable to deal with their chaotic and radical behaviour; they are shoved from Consultant to Consultant, from pillar to post, ward to ward without a proper firm diagnosis. Katie King has spent the best part of elven years in the system, which is home to her thinking like many others.
Therefore the staff have become quite disillusioned with the Clinical Nurse Manager Polly Crookston, with her ideology of lateral thinking of running a hospital.
Nick named Miss Iron Drawers. Polly Crookston is old school nursing and does not like change.
The nursing staff are often subjected to verbal attacks and actual bodily harm, from clients. Buckskins Ward Manager Patricia Crosby reviles she is with child, and suddenly quits over her love affair with Night Staff Nurse Jaafa Hamit. Crookston persuades Senior Charge Nurse James Hiscock to steps into her shoes. He’s in an entwined relationship with Senior Staff nurse Maggie Norris. The Ward Consultant Elisa Bradshaw is under constant pressure from her nursing team, to resolve.
Buckskin ward has the potential to be a highly successful PICU. The other acute wards in the hospital pick and choose their clients for the quiet life, and refuse to take back bed-blockers out of the system. Therefore, Buckskin ward deal with the merry go round of behavioural issues with Miss King having Queen Bee status on the ward. Staff are sometime at loggerheads with each other on how to deal with explosive self-harm.
The staff and clients become entangled with their lives on the ward with dark humour. The social event of each day is the big breakfast that brings staff and clients together as they break bread. The staff talk openly about their social life, which is banded round the ward. At the end of the late shift staff indulge in drinking a few beers and the occasional splif; it usually goes down well to relieve tension. With Mark Cope keeping his ear to the ground or office door, he likes to think that he’s in the know. The seclusion room, or the pokey as the clients call, serves its purpose when a client kicks off.
