The story progresses as first-person narrative by using the narrator is unreliable. He is a man condemned in the beginning of the story.The narrator tells us that from an early age he had loved animals. He and his wife and several pets, including a large black cat beautiful (as described by the narrator) named Annie. This cat is especially fond of the narrator, and vice versa. Mutual friendship last for several years, until the narrator becomes an alcoholic. One night, after returning home completely drunk, and said he believed the cat to avoid him. When panicked trying to grab him, and the narrator cat bites, and in a fit of rage, he seizes the animal, pulls a pen knife from his pocket, and deliberately drilling of cat's eye.
From that moment onwards, the cat flees in terror in his master approach. In the beginning, the narrator is remorseful and regrets his cruelty. "But that feeling soon gave place to irritation. Then came, as if my final and irrevocable overthrow, the spirit of deviation." Take the cat in the garden one morning and connects the noose around his neck, hanging from a tree, where it dies. At that particular night, his mysteriously catches fire, forcing the narrator and his wife and maid to flee their places of work.
The next day, the narrator returns to the ruins of his home found, and printed on one wall, who survived the fire, and the emergence of the giant cat, with a rope around the animal's neck.
