A provocative satire that asks the reader to imagine a world where food cravings, not sexual cravings, are viewed as titillating, where hunger for nourishment, not intercourse, is taboo. This highly imaginative story, set in the author's iconoclastic hometown of Portland, Oregon (well known for its singular views on food, sex, and fashion) follows the life of Buck Perkins and his struggles to operate a public restaurant, where he dreams diners can consume food in public, without shame. Appetite parodies the action, pacing, and points of view of Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter: its references to human sin, tribalism, and even its strange use of the Supernatural as a story-telling device.
