The word ‘cancer’ explodes like a bomb into your life. With it comes a multitude of questions that you need answers to. Advice is offered and experience shared from all sides. It’s hard to know who to trust, and the slow realisation of the downstream effects it will have on you and the lives of all those around you starts to sink in. All this takes place at a time when you may feel angry, depressed, frightened, vulnerable and even guilty about the disease’s impact on your loved ones, yet aware that you have to carry on with your life. This book is not a self-help book. It will not tell you how to fight cancer, how to beat it or where to go for miracle cures, diets or treatments. Whilst the book may be of interest to relatives and friends too, it is written predominantly for you, the patient, the sufferer of this unwelcome guest that has intruded into, and threatens to take over, your life. The book is based on the simple premise that understanding what is going on, within and around you, is the first step towards being able to handle it.
Philip Johnson was Professor of Oncology and Translational Research and Director of the Cancer Research UK Cancer Trials Unit at the University of Birmingham and an Associate Director of the National Cancer Research Network. He is now retired, working part time as Professor of Translational Oncology at the University of Liverpool and The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust.
