Description
Quantitative approaches to design are included in this text. Existing networks to which they can be applied include airline reservation and banking networks, private corporation networks, networks interconnecting data terminals and computers, commercial time-sharing networks, and many others. The prime areas considered are statistical multiplexing and buffering at communication concentrators, as well as topics in overall network design. Following a description of four operating networks, the book discusses capacity assignment in networks, buffer design, topological design of networks, routing and flow control, polling and random access techniques, and line control procedures. Design examples, design tables, and curves are included throughout the book, and, where possible, different analysis and design approaches are compared. The reader need only have some prior knowledge of elementary probability theory to understand and follow the material presented in this text. An appendix summarizes terminology and concepts of point-to-point data communications for those with no prior knowledge.
