Process Dynamics and Control: Control System Synthesis v. 2 (Physical & Chemical Engineering Science)

Volume 2 of 2 contains chapters on the design of simple feedback control systems, extension of the elementary feedback control ideas to multivariable processes, synthesis of multivariable controllers using optimal control theory, and an introduction to periodic processing. The Control system design procedures emphasize regulating controllers, where we attempt to force the plant to operate as close as possible to the optimum steady state operating conditions, whereas the material on periodic processing reveals that it is sometimes desirable to deliberately operate the plant in an unsteady state manner. The development of the simple control techniques includes discussions on the feedback control of an unstable process; the effect of feedback control on simple plants; hardware considerations; stability; synthesis procedures using Bode diagrams, root locus, and empirical rules; and feedforward control. The extension to multivariable plants treats cascade control; interaction of single loop systems and the design of noninteracting controllers; controllability and observability; multivariable feedforward control; and the control of a complete plant.
