Purdah: An Anthology

This anthology brings together literature on the subject of purdah in terms of seclusion, feminine modesty, rights of women, etc. and the way seclusion affected issues of health, education, and relationships. Focussing on purdah as a lived experience, it attempts to find answers to these issues through 19th and 20th century texts written in English, Urdu, Bengali, and Marathi by men and women, Indian and foreign scholars. It includes reformist texts, personal accounts, biographies, novels, poems, satire, essays, depictions of purdah in films, etc.
