Set in the Barbados of the 1390s. Creoleana is perhaps the earliest novel of the Anglophone Caribbean to have been written by a native of the region. First published in 1842. the romantic tale of Jack Goldacre's eventually successful efforts to win the hand of Caroline Fairfields is interwoven with the much gloomler story of Caroline's black half sister, Lucy, whose search for love is confounded by the prejudices of class and race.
