Chinese Encounters

Inge Morath (1923-2002), a long-time member of Magnum, and her husband, the playwright Arthur Miller (1915-2005) visited China in 1978, a trip that coincided with the massive upheaval in the culture after the death of Mao and the fall of Jiang Qing and the Gang of Four. They've produced a wonderfully intimate vision of a timeless society trying to cope with the demands of modernity. Miller describes his discussions with members of the traditional Chinese theater while Morath manages to veer far from the familiar and well-worn track traveled by most photographers.
