The fungi have become favored organisms for research at the cellular and molecular level. Such research involvement has been stimulated by interest in the biotechnological application of fungi in processes related to industry, agriculture, and ecology. The fourth of about ten volumes provides insight into currrent research with fungal populations and communities. It focuses on fungal responses to the physical environment, interactions with other fungi, microorganisms, and invertebrates, and the role of fungi in ecosystem processes, such as decomposition and nutrient cycling. Several chapters deal with various applications, e.g., in biological pest control, natural products discovery, and the degradation of toxic organic compounds.
