Between the years 1945 and 1960 the authors spent many days of each season studying desert life in and about southern California's Joshua Tree National Monument. The result of their studies are descriptions of the behavior and problems of existence for the 42 species of mammals, 166 birds, 36 reptiles, and 5 amphibians found in that area.
