Description
In A German Word Family Dictionary, 12,000 German words and their English translations are arranged alphabetically by their roots, not by their prefixes. Thus, all words formed from a common root are grouped together. For example, rather than combing through column after column of words beginning with zusammen- to find the meaning of zusammebringen, the user can go directly to the stem, bring-, and find zusammenbringen immediately. Not only does this arrangement make it quicker to look up a word, it also makes it easier to remember the word's meaning. As a student learns the meaning of the stem and the nuances of the prefixes and suffixes, he can predict meanings of other words in the same family when he encounters them in his reading. Vocabulary acquisition, vocabulary retention, and insight into the structure of German all increase together.
