Sara's Song

The cruelty, traditions, superstitions and celebrations of plantation life are seen throught the eyes of Sara a 12 year old slave girl who witnesses the killing of a white store clerk for which her brother is falsely accused. Sara and her brother flee the plantation and follow as escape route marked by secret signs to stay ahead of bounty hunters. Danger lurks at every turn and menbers of the Underground Railroad give them aid as they seek freedom in the North. This novel relies on more that 400 hundred interviews of former slaves to describe plantatiom life in Alabama three years before the Civil War.
