As usual, Montooth the alligator and other swamp creatures are involved, as Robert Jay weaves his signature fable into the primary story. The novel develops from 1952 to 1954 when members of The Crew have moved on to high school. Carty once again confronts her nemesis, Haywood Dolder in humorous asides and Elena leads her off the straight and narrow with impish pranks.
