Lisa is Not a Slut

What happens when an otherwise reasonable person begins to hear voices others cannot? In this work of Psychotic Realism author Robbie Whelan brings us to the edge of reality to witness the fi rst psychotic episode of a young teenage girl. As if being a teenager were not enough, worries about looks, social standing among peers, and sexuality, protagonist Lisa now has to deal with hearing other worldly voices no one else around her can perceive. Lisa is virtually kidnapped from the regular everyday life she once shared with family and friends, into a new world redefi ned by the voices, where a boy she’s had a crush on for months could turn out to be the devil in disguise. The voices take on the appearance of representing forces of good and evil as they vie for control of Lisa’s mind. She increasingly becomes alienated from her own desire, beginning to see it as a tool of the devil, and soon she is no longer able to distinguish dark from light or truth from fi ction. Searing and straightforward, Lisa is Not a Slut triumphs in shedding brilliant new light on the experience of psychosis from the point of view of the afflicted.
