Vedanta: An Anthology of Hindu Scripture, Commentary and Poetry is a definitive collection of India’s religious writings from the early Vedas that date from as far back as 2000 B.C. to such modern sages as Ramana Maharshi. The book is a combined effort of Johnson and his teacher and guru, Swami Prabhavananda, who is the respected author and translator of numerous books on Hinduism. The anthology is divided into five sections: the Revealed Scriptures, the Epics, the Auxiliary Scriptures, the Mystic Poets, and the Hindu Renaissance. India’s literature is vast, so the editors had the difficult task of choosing those writings they felt best represented thousands of years of Indian thought.
