Images of an ordinary member of an airline flight crew, and images he captured through his camera, catch our interest, beckon simultaneously with the familiar and unfamiliar, and induce us to reorient ourselves in relation to the past and wonder not only about the people who populate the photos and the lives they led, but also about the world as it was for them and the world as it is or is not anymore. . . . What lends the photos in A New York Bachelor a particular fascination is the glimpse they appear to provide into a gay lifestyle largely in the shadows at the time. The intimacy of some of the photos seems somehow like the back of a mirror, the obverse and personal side of the persona our crew member most likely was obliged to present to the public as a matter of professional service and — at a time when being “out” barely existed as a concept — of passing.
