Jacob, the 3,234th Caretaker of Magic, is trapped by his impatient apprentice Palmer in a magical book from which there is no escape. The cost of resistance? Become a permanent character in a decaying book of fairy tales. The price of freedom? Teach Palmer more magic, and betray the beliefs passed down to him by generations of Caretakers. As Jacob tries to rescue himself and his young neighbor Lucy, the local sheriff chases Palmer, the local press chases the sheriff, a wizardly bookworm gives sage advice, and book’s original characters fight to drive the intruders from their home.
