Charl de Villiers (originally from South Africa but now living in Lake Jackson, Texas) had, despite being profoundly deaf and badly burnt, managed to realize his childhood dream of being the first of his kind to solo circumnavigate the globe. The book "Silent Voyage" authored by Maria de Villiers is the real life story of this remarkable person who had, against huge odds, managed to navigate the treacherous seas and is still facing the challenges of a hearing and unscarred society. The author used his trip around the world as a framework to tell his tales: The burning incident, the ensuing hearing loss, how he had managed to reclaim his life and to know what is and isn't meant to be.
