From Introduction - During the Great War the tactical role of the Infantry was dictated by eh overall supremacy of the machine gun. The Second World War was also very much a war of the machine gun but during that conflict the infantryman was no longer completely subordinate to that weapon for his individual firepower and increased dramatically with the use of the sub-machine gun.
