Robert Lam is a coastal pilot. The novel opens with the death of his stepmother, Lam Fan. Lam Fan's ghost sails with Robert up the coast through the islands on his boat, "The Rose". As they journey, so they also travel through the past, revealing the secrets of Robert's parentage.
