Description

This book was published in England as Writers in Romney Marsh, a title more strictly accurate than its American counterpart. While it is obvious that this "region on the southeast of England, on the borderland of East Sussex and Kent" is not really a sixth continent or even a second Lake District, it may be less obvious that the book is not truly a literary history. Instead, it is a charming and readable account of the sojourns of eight or ten writers who chose to live there in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, among them James, Wells, Conrad, Crane, and Radclyffe Hall. The idea is interesting and the book is recommended.Charles Bishop, English Dept., Univ. of New Orleans Copyright 1986 Reed Business Information, Inc.
