On board the cruiser MARLIN, Chief Officer Webb Carrick saw the forty-foot THRIFT, the floating branch of the Bank of Central Scotland, adrift in the Hebrides, her decks awash, her three-man staff missing. Carrick found all the earmarks of a robbery - but the safe was untouched and œ15,000 were still aboard. Carrick's search for the answers took him to the rugged Hebrides, where the islanders were wary of strangers, for theirs was a life of hardship, mistrust and violence.
