The Preface reminds us that we exist in harmony with our environment and that catastrophic environmental changes could end that existence.

The Introduction describes how, throughout history mankind has failed to interrelate peacefully. He has continually waged wars of ever increasing destruction on himself and his environment. And further, that unleashing the totally destructive power of nuclear weapons in the course of hostilities between nations or by terrorists, the existence of mankind itself is threatened.
