"A History of Rock Music, Third Edition", concentrates primarily on the developments of the music itself, and in that sense, it is similar to a music appreciation textbook, but it concentrates on a single music style. There is some study of the artists and social conditions that gave rise to rock music, but the main focus is the development of the music itself.
