Written around the beginning of the eleventh century, The Tale of Genji is Japan s most famous novel. It s no surprise, then, that illustrations of the story should turn up on folding screens beautiful and practical manifestations of the Japanese aesthetic found inside traditional Japanese homes. This calendar reproduces details from a pair of seventeenth- or eighteenth-century screens in the collection of the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, illustrating scenes from the memorable tale.
