📖 Description
At the age of seven, the author watched as half of her family starved to death in a Ukrainian famine caused by the Communist-forced collectivization of farms in her village of Novaa Salow. Ten years later, she twice escaped German forces only to be captured shortly thereafter; she was then shipped to Germany, never again to see much of her family. After the war she met and married her husband, and the two of them emigrated to the United States. Her powerful story of survival is a vivid reminder of the atrocities visited upon the Slavs in the mid -- 20th century.
