Description

The Lorraine Campaign chronicles the U.S. Third Army, commanded by Lt. General George S. Patton Jr., and its struggle though the slow, arduous campaigning of the fall of 1944, from the Moselle to German border and the West Wall in the Saar region. After the reduction of Metz, the story ends on December 18, 1944, when the Third Army was diverted to move against the German winter counteroffensive in the Ardennes. A parallel account from the enemy side puts the American operations in proper perspective. The volume contains also an analytical description of the decisions of commanders at army, corps, and division levels that provided the framework of the tactical operations. Historical perspective is enhanced by frequent reference to earlier campaigning over this same terrain in 1870, 1914-1918 and 1940.
