Black Man-Poor Man and God

What was it like to be a poor black kid on the South in the 1940s and fifties? In Black Man-Poor Man and God, Pastor Earnest L. Birton, Sr., relates his experiences. Born in southern Arkansas, Earnest L. Birton was one of ten children. His father, Henry Birton, was a sharecropper and the family was always poor, but happy, even with one set of clothes to wear and a pair of shoes that had to last a year. The author was inspired to write this book by his 115-year old grandfather, with whom he lived for about five years in the 1940s and fifties.

Pastor Birton has been married for the past forty-nine years to a beautiful woman and they have six living children, two grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

He is still poor but happy, with a whole lot of love in his heart for everyone; that in itself makes him rich in spirit.
