This volume presents recent thinking on the role of law in the American West. Western Legal History is a subject of recent scholarly focus. Previous generations of scholars concerned with the frontier process seldom considered law as a subject for inquiry. In the past quarter century, the scholars republished here have created a field of specializationand brought the issue of law into the general field.
