Hardy embodies the idea that we live in an indifferent universe, possibly even hostile to us. He also believes that everything we do is subject to the control of an impersonal force, such as destiny or fate. This novel illustrates these themes in a story of the disastrous marriage between a restless woman seeking excitement and a man interested in settling down where he was born.
