Slobodan Milosevic's Yugoslavia (Dictatorships)

This book explores the leadership of Slobodan Milosevic, president of Yugoslavia from 1997 to 2000. In 2001 he stood trial at the international war crimes tribunal (court) in The Hague, Netherlands, charged with crimes against humanity, violating the laws or customs of war, grave breaches of the Geneva Conventions and genocide for his role during the wars of the 1990s in Croatia, Bosnia, and Kosovo. Milosevic conducted his own defense. He died after five years in prison with just fifty hours of testimony left before the conclusion of the trial. The legacy left behind by Slobodan Milosevic is controversial. There are many people who despise him and call him a brutal dictator who did not hesitate to slaughter his own citizens. Others feel he was a strong leader who was faced with handling civil strife while the former Yugoslavia was being ripped apart from the inside. The Dictatorships series explores the history and personality of this leader, as well as examining the ways in which he exerted control over the people.
