In the saga of the American West, the story of the large-scale mining of gold (from 1849 to 1942) in the Mother Lode and the Northern Mines is an exciting chapter. Fortunately, Jack Wagner has undertaken the recording of this history before all trace of it vanishes. The physical evidence of these great enterprises is almost gone and with it, due to the passage of time, most of the people, too, who actually owned and operated the mines.

This book covers in depth those mines of major production in all phases of mining practice. These mines were successful due to good geological conditions and good management. It would have been impossible to cover the thousands of small mines and prospects.

The gold mines were a major factor inthe economic and population growth of the area, but since the economic changes brought about by World War II, it has been impossible to operate the mines successfully.
