O Primo BasÃlio, is Queirós' criticism of the bourgeoisie in Lisbon during his life. LuÃsa and Jorge's marriage is apparently happy, but while Jorge lives far away on business, BasÃlio, a handsome and cynical bon vivant who once dated LuÃsa, returns and seduces her. But LuÃsa's traitorous maid, Juliana, intercepts a letter between the two, and blackmail's LuÃsa. On his return, Jorge suspects nothing, and even though Juliana dies in an attempt to imprison her, LuÃsa falls ill from her guilt and dies, after confessing her adultery.
