O Primo Basílio, is Queirós' criticism of the bourgeoisie in Lisbon during his life. Luísa and Jorge's marriage is apparently happy, but while Jorge lives far away on business, Basílio, a handsome and cynical bon vivant who once dated Luísa, returns and seduces her. But Luísa's traitorous maid, Juliana, intercepts a letter between the two, and blackmail's Luísa. On his return, Jorge suspects nothing, and even though Juliana dies in an attempt to imprison her, Luísa falls ill from her guilt and dies, after confessing her adultery.
