A Queda dum Anjo (Portuguese Edition)

One of the most famous of Castelo Branco's many works, A Queda dum Anjo is a political satire which describes the corruption of a provincial noble who goes to Lisbon to serve in parliament. Calisto Eloi leaves his wife, Teodora, behind on the family estate in Miranda, in order to restore the laws to what they should be-what they were hundreds of years ago. His positions and oratory attract a lot of attention in Lisbon, but he is slowly corrupted politically and personally. While his positions become liberal, he also falls in love, first with a socialite who doesn't return that love, and then with Ifigénia, the widow of a Brazilian general.
