While much of this book is concerned with the history and development of various aspects of railways, and the achievements of the many outstanding engineers, emphasis is constantly placed on the important part which railways play in modern life. The aim has been to maintain complete impartiality and to state facts, both pleasant and unpleasant, without emotion. The reader seeking railway nostalgia will find none of it in this book, but it is hoped that anyone with an intelligent interest in railways will find plenty to satisfy them.
